St Margarets Church Olton, Solihull, war memorial plaque and names

A church that holds a splendid Christmas Fayre is the St Margaret's Church in Olton, Solihull. There are also two First World War memorial plaques within the church, dedicated to the men who did not return home after the war. Beautifully crafted in marble and decorated above the list of names.

This is the front of the church photographed a few weeks ago.

The side of the church which is adjacent to the Warwick road and Kineton Green road. This church does not have a grave yard. It was finished being built in about 1896. Each war memorial plaque is placed on either side on the main door. The names on the two plaques have their regiment listed beside them.

Names on plaque one:

There are about 52 names on these plaques, a lot of men to loose in such a small village. Especially as there is another plaque with more names in a church just down the road. That will be shown shortly, as well as the many other churches and memorials that I have photographed. Next week I also have a 1940s photograph album from another church service that is local to this one to show. It is a bit of a mystery!

Looking at Lode Lane and Elmdon Park in Solihull circa 1900s

Living on the busy Lode Lane in Solihull its hard to imagine it any different than the busy road it is today. Elmdon Park however is a haven of peace and still very much unspoilt by so called progress. These postcards are all from photographs taken in the early part of the twentieth century.

Yes Lode Lane was just a dirt track surrounded by country side and farm land. Our house was built in the early 1950s and the land was part of the farm here. Which is why when digging out our pond a few years ago we came across a tractor's axle and wheels. Its still there as impossible to dig out, so we just moved the pond a little further along.

Another view of Lode Lane on a postcard sent in December 1905. It was sent to a Miss Davies of 1 South View, Illesly from a M Mitchell thanking her for the card and present. How times have changed. now we would send an email or post a thanks on Facebook. But this type of information will vanish into the endless computer memory and be lost in time. If ever we were to loose the use of electricity and computers, how many photographs and memories would go just like that. Not so impossible that it could happen.

A postcard of Elmdon Park circa 1900s. Not sure which part as can not recall a fence as such around the park. But it does remain unchanged and a haven for wild life. We lived in Haymills when young and would walk to Elmdon Park with a picnic and sit at the top of the hill. Great fun rolling down the hill and playing in the trees. We moved in the mid 1970s to a house just around the corner from the park but as a teenager we visited the local pubs more than the park those days! Sometimes don't you wish you could turn back time.....

That completes the Cannon Hill War Memorial. there is another war memorial by the park which has no names but I will show in another blog along with the others that I have now photographed and recorded.

There are so many postcards of this war memorial and it was a favourite during the first part of the twentieth century to visit for a holiday.

Boer War Memorial, Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham Gardner to Parker

As the Boer War Memorial in Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham has such a long list of names. Here is the second part covering the third panel from Gardner to Parker. The South African War soldiers who died from 1899 to 1902 from Birmingham are commemorated on this large memorial in the park.

This is the side view of the memorial taken in about 2007. Our dog Ufton was very interested also!

This postcard of Cannon Hill park was sent in 1944 by someone on holiday in the area. Apart from general aging of the stone and the park has less floral beds and topiary, little had changed.

Still one more panel to go and that I will cover in the next blog. Such a long list of names that is on this memorial of the Birmingham men that died during this Victorian war. Will we never learn!

Cannon Hill Park War Memorial, Birmingham for the South Africa War 1899 - 1902 (A - GA)

One of the longest list of names on a war memorial is in Cannon Hill Park in Birmingham. This memorial is to remember the fallen men from the South African War of 1899 to 1902. General Sir Ian Hamilton unveiled this large memorial for the Birmingham men who died in this conflict on the 23rd June 1906. Because each panel has such a long list of names, I will cover this over three blog posts for ease.

The sculpture was made by Albert Toft. I will apologies for this first very long blog post but the list of names run into hundred and then I have plenty of pictures with post cards to show. This blog will cover the names from the beginning of A to Gales.

This was the War Memorial situated in the park taken in January 2007.  It has essentially 4 sides to it with a dedication and then panels of names listed. Some have the regiment served and all have their rank. The panels were very difficult to read and I had to make a list after taking the photographs on this cold January day. Our dog was very patient and stood by my side looking up to see what I was doing!

Side 1 at the front had the dedication and it read as such:

To the glorious memory of the sons of Birmingham who fell in South Africa 1899 - 1902 and to perpetuate the example of all who served in the war. This memorial is erected by their fellow citizens.

There are some scattered memorials for this South African War also known as the Boer War around. Not as many as found for the First World War but they are very valuable to local historians and to those tracing their family history.

The above post card was sent in 1907 from Birmingham to Water Orton in Birmingham. It meant a lot to the sender who was a grandmother and I suspect a mother of one of the men listed.

The second side had the following names on listed in alphabetical order:

Solihull War Memorial by St Alphege Church

Solihull War memorial by St Alphege Church.

If you take the small side road that goes past St Alphege Church in Solihull, then you will pass the Tall Solihull War Memorial. Originally unveiled on the 21st June 1921 by the Earl of Craven; the war memorial was moved a few meters in 1994 to allow for safer viewing and also restored in 2009. It now includes the First and Second World War as well as the Korean War.

solihull war memorial panels

I am assuming that the panels without a date are from the First World War. So many names all killed in the course of this thing called war. Such a waste of lives. Still no Frederick Ward, my great uncle that was killed in the 1939 - 45 war. He lived on valley Road which is in the Parish of Elmdon, once in Sheldon and now in Solihull. But I still have not found his name on a local memorial. More memorials to come in later blogs.
